    Wood planer FAQs

What does a wood planer do?

An electric wood planer quickly removes thin layers from wood to smooth surfaces, reduce thickness or create specific shapes. It's like a hand planer, but much faster and easier to use.

What is a wood planer used for?

With an electric planer in hand, you can make quick work of a range of woodworking tasks, such as:

    • Shaving low spots in floor joists
    • Shaping deck posts
    • Planing door edges for a smoother fit
    • Removing wood from door casings
    • Ensuring cabinets fit snugly against walls

How do you use a wood planer?

RYOBI® electric wood planers are simple and easy to use. Here's how to get the best results:

    1. Set your desired cut depth using the adjustment knob.
    2. Rest the front sole plate flat on the surface, ensuring the blade doesn't touch the wood yet.
    3. Start the planer, let the motor reach full speed, then gently ease the blade into contact with the wood. Then push it forward steadily.
    4. Keep your pressure on the front grip as the planer engages. Then balance hand pressure between the handle and front knob as both sole plates contact the work.
    5. As you approach the end of the wood, release the front knob and drive through smoothly to avoid 'sniping' the edge. Finally, turn the planer off.
