Cordless and corded power tools

How to increase battery lifetime?

General recommendations concerning battery use:

  • Always store in a cool, dry place;
  • Do not leave unused for long periods of time;
  • Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity ;
  • It is recommended to fully charge batteries upon purchase, after use and before a long period of storage

Depending on the battery type (lead, nickel-cadmium, lithium-ion), the following recommendations apply:

  • Lead batteries should be charged at least once every 4 weeks: continuous charging is strongly recommended, since these chargers and batteries were designed accordingly.
  • Nickel-cadmium batteries must be fully charged each time to ensure maximum lifetime, mainly for the first charges.
  • For optimum operation, lithium-ion batteries require an ambient temperature of at least 10°C
  • When Lithium-ion batteries are fully charged, switch off the charger and remove the battery

What should I do with my spent batteries?

Spent batteries can be disposed of in the collection bins provided at your retailer or at your rubbish tip. Remember that it is dangerous to throw batteries, even spent, on the fire.

In compliance with European law, Ryobi helps preserve the environment, in collaboration with Screlec, a company specialised in the collection and recycling of spent batteries and accumulators. Please help us continue this effort by not disposing of your batteries with household waste.

Can I use my sander on plaster?

Plaster is a material with fine highly aggressive dust which quickly clogs up the motor of even the most carefully designed tools. You are strongly recommended not to sand plaster, unless otherwise indicated in the owner's operating manual. This would considerably reduce the lifetime of your tool, and invalidate the warranty.

When should I replace the grease on my rotary hammer?

The grease on your rotary hammer must be checked and the seals changed every 150 hours of use. These operations must be carried out by an approved repairer who will check the condition of the brushes at the same time and service the pneumatic part. Please respect the instructions in the owner's operating manual.

My heat gun stops occasionally, is this normal?

As a safety measure, Ryobi heat guns are designed to stop automatically if they overheat. This system, which uses a heat probe, avoids any abnormal temperature increase which could damage your tool. When the nozzle is brought too close to a surface, or the gun is used for too long, the safety device cuts in. You will have to wait for at least 20 minutes before being able to switch on your heat gun again, which will start normally.

My electric appliance make the circuit breaker trip, what should I do?

Check the power available on the socket and the condition of the fuses and the circuit-breaker. Ryobi appliances equipped with the "LiveTool Indicator" can detect whether power is reaching the appliance. Check that the power available is the same as that required to operate the appliance (refer to the owner's operating manual). Check that the electrical connections and the power supply cable are in good condition and that there is no humidity. If you fail to locate a problem on the electrical installation, do not open your appliance yourself: take it to an approved repairer for checking.

My electric appliance does not start, what should I do?

Some of our electric appliances (e.g. blow-vacs and chain saws) are equipped with a safety device. Read your owner's operating manual to check the start procedure:

  • on chain saws, the chain brake must be off;
  • on blow-vacs, the bag and the tubes must be fitted in order to start up

Check the power available on the socket and the condition of the fuses and the circuit-breaker. Ryobi appliances equipped with the "LiveTool Indicator" can detect whether power is reaching the appliance. Check that the power available is the same as that required to operate the appliance (refer to the owner's operating manual). Check that the electrical connections and the power supply cable are in good condition and that there is no humidity. If you fail to locate a problem on the electrical installation, do not open your appliance yourself: take it to an approved repairer for checking.

Petrol engine tools

How to make a good petrol mixture?

Two-stroke engines require a mixture of lead-free 95 or 98 octane petrol + 100 % synthetic oil (do not use semi-synthetic oil, since its content is variable and it is impossible to define the correct mixture). The mixture proportions are given in the owner's operating manual: read carefully before starting your tool.

Return to Top of Page ▲

I have finished using my tool and still have some mixture left. How long can I keep it?

The mixture must be prepared in small quantities each time you use your equipment. A mixture cannot be stored for more than 3 weeks, due to the unstable composition of lead-free 95 or 98 octane petrol and the natural separation of the oil from the petrol. If you prepare the mixture in advance, shake the can vigorously before use.

Extended storage may impair operation (difficult starting and acceleration) or even cause the engine to seize, due to separation of the oil and the petrol.

Return to Top of Page ▲

Are ready-to-use mixtures bought in the shops suitable?

You are strongly recommended to avoid ready-to-use mixtures, even if they contain additives.

Addition of extra synthetic oil to increase the percentage impairs correct engine operation and may cause seizing, as when there is insufficient oil.

How should I store my Petrol tools?

You are recommended, even when storing for a short period of time (a few days), to drain the petrol tank after use and empty the carburettor. To empty the carburettor, restart the engine after draining the petrol tank and allow the engine to stall when it runs out of petrol.

These precautions are essential before winter storage to preserve the lifetime of the seals and membranes in the carburettor.

High pressure cleaners

How do I suck in detergent with my high pressure cleaner?

Some of our high pressure cleaners have a feature allowing detergent to be sucked in and added to the water sprayed by the tool.

To suck in the product, the cleaner must be operated in "low pressure" mode by pressing on the end of the lance (refer to the owner's operating manual). If you use this function, do not adjust the pressure at the pump or on the gun at the same time (if your device is equipped with these features).

Note that only Ryobi products or products designed especially for high pressure cleaners should be used; products intended for domestic use are prohibited.

 Return to Top of Page ▲

How should I store my high pressure cleaner when not in use?

You should always drain your high pressure cleaner after use. Switch off the water supply and run your appliance for a few seconds to evacuate the water from the pump. When the inlet pipe becomes flat, the pump is completely empty.

If you do not intend to use your high pressure cleaner for a long period of time, for example over winter, you are recommended not only to empty the appliance as indicated above but also to protect the pump. Remove the hose then pour a small quantity of car anti-freeze into the water inlet hole. Run the appliance for 2 or 3 seconds until the liquid comes out of the cleaner outlet hole.

As a precaution, you appliance should nevertheless be stored in a room where there is no risk of frost.

 Return to Top of Page ▲

How do I start my high pressure cleaner?

Your high pressure cleaner is equipped with a filter at the pump inlet to prevent foreign bodies from entering the pump (e.g. sand, gravel, earth, etc.). Make sure that this filter is always fitted whenever you connect the water supply pipe.

Similarly, when making connections, make sure that there are no foreign bodies in the hoses.

The water supply must always be switched on before starting the electric or petrol engine. Operation without water damages the pump, especially the piston seal.

Only extension cables with 3 wires of minimum wire cross-section 2.5 mm² should be used. Unroll the extension cable fully before starting the engine, to avoid abnormal overheating.

What type of oil should I put in my high pressure cleaner?

The oil in the gearboxes of our high pressure cleaners may, depending on which model you have, be replaced by automotive oil of type:

  • SAE 80W90 for models EHP1037/1137/1236
  • SAE 30 for models RHP4121/4130/5140 EHP 1240/1340/1560
  • SAE 75W90 for models RHP6150/1150/2150/1566X
  • 10W40 for the other models

When should I change the oil in my high pressure cleaner?

Check the oil level regularly, but as long as there are no repairs which would require the oil to be drained, there is no need to completely replace the oil.

My high pressure cleaner operates but lacks pressure, what is happening?

Check the condition of the accessories, the lance could be blocked by foreign bodies or scale: if you find a foreign body in the lance, use the unclogging tool, calibrated according to the lance diameter, which is supplied with the appliance.  If the problem remains, the pump valves may be worn. The equipment must be sent to a specialist in this case.

Can I use water from a well or a drum to supply a high pressure cleaner?

Due to the high flow rate required by the pump, water from a well or a tank cannot be used.

This type of supply can be used if the water tank is placed at a height or if a submerged pump with an output of 10 litres a minute is placed in the well.

In both cases, it is essential to fit a filter on the water supply to prevent foreign bodies from entering the pump. Failure to do so invalidates the warranty.

Are fuses fitted in my high pressure cleaner?

Ryobi high pressure cleaners have a built-in protection system which stops the motor automatically in the event of overheating: extension cable cross-section too small, less than 2.5 mm², intensive use, very hot weather, etc. In this case, you must allow your cleaner to cool down before switching it back on normally.

 Return to Top of Page ▲

My high pressure cleaner stops after half an hour, what is happening?

Ryobi high pressure cleaners have a built-in protection system which stops the motor automatically in the event of overheating: this is normal if it happens after intensive use for more than ¾ of an hour or if the weather is very hot. After cooling down, the device should start normally. Otherwise, check that the cable cross-section is at least 2,5 mm² and that the motor is cooled down correctly (fan operation, air inlets not blocked, etc.).

Check the power available on the socket and the condition of the fuses and the circuit-breaker.

My high pressure cleaner operates jerkily, what is happening?

Check the condition of the accessories, the lance could be blocked by foreign bodies or scale: if you find a foreign body in the lance, use the unclogging tool, calibrated according to the lance diameter, which is supplied with the appliance.  If the problem remains, the pump valves may be worn. The equipment must be sent to a specialist in this case.
